MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

a program for children ages 12 - 14, equivalent to 7th and 8th grades

Students in Welsh Hills School Middle School find themselves in the beginning stage when the child experiences the physical and emotional changes of emerging adolescence. Strong role models and consistent, but gentle, guidance are important characteristics of the student-teacher relationship during these years. The first and foremost goal of the Middle School program is to sustain and nurture the love for learning that students bring from the Lower School. When students graduate from The Welsh Hills School, they have become independent learners who are fully prepared for academic and personal success.

Students participate in small cross-graded groups that feature integrated studies. This interdisciplinary curriculum is enriched by extracurricular activities and other programs that transport the students beyond the walls of the School into new and varied social and educational experiences. Many opportunities are available for the development of leadership skills.  Additionally, Middle School students benefit from the Learning with Laptops program where a personal laptop computer is an everyday learning tool, both at school and at home.

During their final year in the program, they work to complete a graduation project that consists of a personal challenge project, a community service project and public speaking experiences.

The Middle School curriculum consists of intensive studies in reading composition, math (including algebra), social studies, science, Spanish, music, art and physical education. They continue to use their laptops to aid them in research and the production of their work, as well as continuing to develop their computer skills and savvy. Critical thinking, higher level problem-solving and a display of academic and personal competence is a fundamental priority in the pursuit of these disciplines.
