The Arts and Phys Ed

Visual Arts

In the Art studio, we practice the art inquiry method championed by arts educator Laura Chapman. During each studio experience, the Welsh Hills students is guided through three points of inquiry- Looking at, Living with, and Creating works of ART.

We learn to carefully LOOK at objects or images and use the language of art to discover and describe what we SEE.  We consider how we LIVE with art- what messages or meanings do these images have for US? How can we make these messages, skills and techniques our own?

When try our hand and CREATE our own images of meaning, describing our own life experiences, practicing skills and techniques with the tools and media of the artist.

Music Education

The Welsh Hills music program includes a wide variety of topics and approaches to learning.  The youngest children learn how to interpret emotions through music, by listening to unique pieces of music and then discussing the mood, color, and sounds that make that particular piece distinctive.  They also learn about loud vs. soft and fast vs. slow through playing instruments, singing, and dance movement.  They make choices to help them grow musically at their own pace.

The Primary Class focuses on many different aspects of music and begin to study composers.  They also participate in singing solo and in groups. Group singing helps the student to become a better listener with rhythm and harmony. Solo singing helps the student with their independence and self-confidence. Various musical activities help the students to explore different musical elements at their own pace.

The Intermediate and MIddle School students work on creating original compositions with melody and rhythm.  They also study composers and use their laptops to conduct research about the composer's history, family, education, compositions and musical background.  They also work on performing solo singing and singing in a choral group.

Each Spring the whole school gets involved with the Spring Musical production.  This provides a terrific opportunity for students to try their hand at the performing arts and learning about all facets of a production.

Physical Education

Welsh Hills School promotes fitness for a lifetime through development of expressive and effective movement, age-appropriate skills, and learning of health-enhancing behaviors. Students learn and exhibit the attributes of good sportsmanship.

Our younger students (Children's House and Primary) are instructed by Amparo at the Welsh Hills School, enjoying outdoor activities in warm weather and indoor activities in the Great Room.

The kids enjoy a wide variety of physical activities including soccer, capture the flag, kickball, basketball, jogging, tumbling, bean bags, jump ropes, and many others.

Our older students (Intermediate and Middle School) go to Denison twice a week (depending on our ability to arrange with Denison) to use the university's outstanding facilities. Scott (who is also New Albany's high school men's lacrosse coach) is the primary P. E. teacher, partnering with a Denison student.

Students enjoy a wide variety of activities including swimming, indoor volleyball, outdoor sand volleyball, tennis, flag football, basketball, floor hockey, soccer, capture the flag, and kickball. The students also participate in the Presidential Physical Fitness program.

In Our Library...

Our library is a PEACEFUL AND FRIENDLY PLACE for hearing stories, curling up with a book, doing research, borrowing and even making our own books!  The rug near " Easy Reader Island" is where Children's House and Primary Students gather to hear stories and learn library etiquette.

Our library is USER FRIENDLY. All students are learning to find the books they want, and to check them out and back into the library with a high degree of independence.

Intermediate and Middle School students have been a great help practicing their library skills while shelf reading and making sure the books are in their proper places.
